George Baker was a general labourer, born in Shelton BDF, and with his wife Mary from Ratby, Leicester, had four daughters and a son. The family lived in Duck Street in 1901.

Soldier’s Death—The funeral took place at the Cemetery on Wednesday of the late Pte. George Baker (Royal Engineers) who passed away on Sunday, aged 53. Deceased, who resided at 5 Sussex-place, Rushden, joined up at the outbreak of the war, and had been twice to France, but was sent home through illness. His son, Sergt. J. Baker, is in the Auxiliary Hospital at Higham Ferrers. The mourners comprised Mrs. G. Baker (widow), Mr. G. H. Baker and Sergt. J. Baker (sons), Mrs. F. Rawlings (daughter), Mr. and Mrs. T. White (son-in-law and daughter), Mrs. Bunting (daughter), Mrs. Chas. Baker (sister-in-law), Mrs. C. Bates (sister), Miss E. Baker (daughter), and Mr. W. Baker (brother). The wounded soldiers from Higham Hospital also followed. Five beautiful wreaths were placed on the grave.
