Rushden Echo, 5th April, 1918, transcribed by Gill Hollis
Patriotic Rushden Family
Four Sons with The Colours – In the Thick of the Fighting

A splendid record of service in the country’s cause lies to the credit of the family of Mrs R Baker, 32 Winchester-road, Rushden, formerly of Ringstead, all of whose sons are serving their country in France.

The soldiers concerned comprise Corpl. C M Baker, of the Royal Engineers, who enlisted in October 1915; Pte. W Baker, of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, and Pte. H Baker, of the Machine Gun Corps, both of whom joined the Colours in November 1916; and Pte A H Baker, of the Army Veterinary Corps, who enlisted in June 1917.

With the exception of Arthur, they have been through the thick of the fighting, and Walter was badly wounded in the leg on April 1st, last year, and was in hospital in Newcastle for five months. All four boys are natives of Ringstead, and Mrs Baker, we understand, was the only mother in that village who had four sons serving in the Army. [see: Schedule 175, Gladstone Street 1901 census]
