Following the request of the Home Office to Lady Reading she toured England and held meetings where she asked the women to join an organisation to carry out welfare work, especially with evacuees and displaced persons.
Rushden W.V.S. (as it then was) was formed in 1939 by Mrs. Alice Muxlow (wife of Midland Bank Manager) who formed a small committee to help with the organisation. Activities
Was kept at the Old Post Office (now Midland Bank) and issued to evacuees and their families and helpers. Masses of clothing sent from Australia, Canada and U.S.A. were also sorted there. National Savings School Canteen Some of our members also belonged to the A.R.P. (Civil Defence) and gave help at First Aid Posts, as we had several bombing incidents. Some members joined the Queen's Messengers, a forerunner of the Food Flying Sguad (now disbanded).

Rushden W.V.S. ceased to operate for a few years after the war, but was reformed in 1954 by Lady Hesketh, County Organiser, at a large meeting in the Masonic Hall, when Audrey Perkins was made centre Organiser. It became the Women's Royal Voluntary Service in 1966. Today (2009) there is a Monday luncheon club run in Rushden by the WRVS. |
