Vegetables for Sailors

Rushden Echo and Argus, February 19th 1944, transcribed by Kay Collins

VegetablesThe first two sacks of vegetables dispatched by the Rushden W.V.S. Centre were received by H.M. minesweeper Emberley and H.M. trawler Remexo. In a message of thanks the skipper of the "Emberley" says the vegetables were very much appreciated by all on board and were "certainly in very good condition". A petty officer of the "Remexo" sends "best wishes from the lads in the mess". The Rushden Centre will continue to collect vegetables on the first Tuesday of each month. The first consignment included carrots, parsnips, beetroot, green vegetables and a large quantity of onions.

Rushden Echo and Argus, August 1944, transcribed by Kay Collins

Vegetables—The most recent monthly collection in Rushden of vegetables for minesweepers was carried out by the Intermediate School at the invitation of the W.V.S. and on August 1st three sacks of vegetables, weighing 149 pounds in all, were dispatched to a port. A message has now been received from the commander of a minesweeper, who says that the vegetables were very much appreciated and enjoyed. The September collection will be made by Newton-road School, and it is hoped that the other schools will each take a turn in this good work.
