Althletic Club Roll of Honour
Rushden Echo, 1st April 1921

War Memorial—The Rushden Athletic Club war memorial, one of the most handsome of its kind in the town, is now fixed in the main entrance porch. It is a massive tablet in solid oak, nearly 6 feet wide by about 6 feet high. On each side are two tapering pillars. Across the top on carved scrolls is the title “Rushden Athletic Club and Institute. Roll of Honour. 1914 -1918.” Underneath in three panels are the names of all the members of the club who served in the Forces, the 43 who lost their lives having a gilt border round and, on top, the words “In Memoriam.” All the names and other inscriptions are in gold, and the whole has a highly polished finish so beautifully worked that the memorial appears to have a surface of glass. It is a very worthy memorial to the men whose names are inscribed on it, and is a tribute that will last for many years.

Athletic Club’s Impressive Record

Two hundred and ninety-seven members of Rushden Athletic Club and Institute have served in H.M. Forces during the war. Sixteen have been killed on ward service and 20 have been discharged. The service roll now numbers 261, of whom six are prisoners of war. The club has sent each serving member a Christmas present of 35s., and has been forwarding gifts of 5s. at regular intervals of two months.

The money to provide these grants has been raised by voluntary subscriptions and donations from the members. Mr. E. W. Smith is the Services Fund secretary.
