Rushden people have seen the last of the horse drawn railway drays in the town. The three remaining horses have been taken to the London depot and replaced by two new motor vehicles.

Among those who will miss them is Mr. John William Gordon, Irchester Road, Rushden, who has been working with horses at Rushden Station for over thirty years.

He now works in the loading sheds and says he is “absolutely lost” without his horses.

The new motor vehicles brought up the total strength of Rushden station lorries to eight, and Rushden, Higham Ferrers and Raunds are now well served.

In the old days Rushden Station stables housed as many as twelve horses, but at that time only Rushden and Higham Ferrers were catered for. Now that the working area has extended, the value of a horse is not comparable with that of a motor vehicle.
