‘Pete Perfect Salisbury Shoes’

Detail from the tongue with brand logo

Pete Salisbury – Mater Shoemaker - made cycling shoes for over 30 years but always worked alone. At first he was in Pightles Terrace before a move to Avenue Road.

His cycling shoes were noted as being the finest and eventually branded as ‘Pete Perfect Salisbury Shoes’. He also made shoes for those with imperfect feet. Part made shoes would be sent for approval before the finishing was done, and would offer other adjustments to heel styles. Aerodynamic styling and finest part of the leather was used. He would ask for a sketch of their feet but “don’t do it yourself, get an assistant to do it, and wear appropriate socks.”

He worked from the 1950s into the 1980s, when his shoes were selling for around £80 a pair. No advertising was done, but he had made custom shoes for many top racers during the 1960s and 70s..

In his younger days he and his wife Eileen were enthusiastic members of the Irchester Wheelers.
