John Cave & Sons Ltd
A retirement in 1951 & an outing to Blackpool

Memories - Celia Limmage, 2007

Celia Limmage contacted us with this photograph. She tells us the occasion was Albert's retirement.

Celia worked at Caves from 1948 to 1951 and she cycled from Irthlingborough to work in the shoe room. The foreman was Albert Dickinson, the finishing room foreman was Albert Graves and the rough stuff foreman was George Agutter. The Manager was Mr Perry and Mr Capon was "the boss".

The shoe room jobs were socking, heel socks, long socks, bottom stamping with the brand and trademarks (lots of different ones), sizing, polishing, lacing, examining and boxing up. The closing room forewoman left and then kept the wool shop near the Feathers in High Street. I also worked for a time at Seabrooks, next to Rollie Cox's cafe.

The railway kept their horses oposite the station in Station Road, where the market used to be.

Mrs Molly Smith sent these pictures of an outing in the early 1950s to Blackpool

Molly Mills (now Smith) tells us :

This trip was to Blackpool Illuminations.

We left on Friday night and returned home on Sunday evening. It was in the early 1950s.

I would really like to get in touch with Muriel Nichols again.

The picture (left) is Muriel Nichols, with our landlady centre and me on the right.

Note: If you can help us to grant Molly her wish to make contact with Muriel, please contact us and we'll send a note to Molly.
