Factory Dinner and Dance

FACTORY DINNER AND DANCE

The Factory Dinner and Dance was held at the Rushden Windmill Hall on December 15th, when employees, wives and friends attended.

Dancing to the local rock and roll band ‘The Sapphires’ and The Richardson Players the evening was made most enjoyable with outstanding artists in Les Karabas a colourful Caribbean couple who held the audience spellbound with a very good display of native dancing and on a lighter note Vic Templar and Jeannette proved some slapstick comedy on a unicycle.

Replying to Mr. John Horrell’s speech, Mr. H. Attley thanked the management on behalf of all employees for providing such a good dinner and an equally good amount of work.

Bouquets were presented by Miss Pat Knowles and Gill Ager to Mrs. C.E.B. Horrell, Mrs. J.C. Horrell, Mrs. J.M. Alison and Mr. M.C.C. Knowles and a surprise bouquest to the wife of Mr. Frank Clayton, our eldest serving employee.

Mrs. ALICE ATTLEY CLICKING ROOM

Joining the firm in July, 1920, Alice Attley has almost 42 years of service behind her
and looks good enough for several more.
Originally in the old Rough Stuff Department
doing heel building, she now sorts and marks uppers in the Clicking Room. A very keen
enthusiast of Old Time dancing Alice makes all her own dresses and this is her favourite
pastime. We trust she will spend many more happy years with us at ‘Oral’.

Departmental News

Office

We welcome Miss Jill Wilce who is with us for a few months before going up to Oxford to study English Literature.     Jill is also appearing as Sabrina in Sabrina Fair, being produced by The Rushden Dramatic Society.

We welcome back Mr. Roger ‘Paladine’ Denton after a bout of sinus trouble.

Our other member of that ilk namely Mr. John ‘Nap Hand’ Denton is fast becoming a scourge among local goalkeepers, he recently scored all five goals when holding Stanwick Rovers to a five all draw, his moment of glory coming with a penalty to save a point. He also scored in the victory over an understated Victoria Millers team and now looks forward to keeping his club from the bottom of the League.

Engagements

Miss Mary Smith to Mr. Robert Smith of Wellingborough on December 23rd

Clicking Room

We congratulate Pat Houghton on becoming a father. His wife presented him with a son, Richard, on January 12th. Pat, being a keen cyclist has already placed an order for another bike, while at the moment he has to get used to the idea of pushing a four wheeler!

Don Tomlin completed 40 years with the company in February, and we trust he will be with us for some time.

We all wish ‘God Speed’ to Mrs. ‘Rose’ Gregorczuk who sailed for New Zealand on March 1st to join other members of her family already there.

Dateliner

Our congratulations go out to Mr. Ken Smith who became the father of a son, Peter, on January 7th, making him quite proud of the fact that he now has both a daughter and son.

Key of the Door

Miss Jackie Bray of Thrapston was 21 on January 16th, and all her workmates enjoyed a slice of birthday cake to mark the occasion.

Engagements

Mr. Trevor Wadsworth became engaged to Miss Christine Hodson in January.

Shoe Room

The girls in the Shoe Room celebrated their Christmas Dinner at the Green Dragon, Higham Ferrers, and thoroughly enjoyed themselves, as did the six who arrived late.

Mrs. Joan Garland who is still away after breaking her thigh when falling outside, repeat outside, one of the village locals has now discarded her crutches, and we all hope she will soon be back with us after being away over four months.

Closing Room

While many are thinking of the spring double (Grand National and Lincoln) we have two definite starters in the Matrimonial Stakes in March.

Miss Nora Halifax, who has been busy painting and decorating her new home at Lowick, gets married at Lowick St. Peter’s Church on March 17th.

Miss Lorna Jones gets married at Rushden Park Road Baptist on March 10th to Dave West.

We wish them all every happiness.

Another Key

Miss Sheila Houghton was 21 on February 10th, we offer her our good wishes.

Bambinos and Leprechauns

Mrs. Maureen Newcombe (Ireland) and Mrs. Maria Girardi (Italy) are both looking forward to the patter of tiny feet in the near future.

Mrs. Alice Hopton became a grandmother on the 31st December (something of a delayed Christmas present).

Burying The Hatchet

The above saying may seem all very well, but Else Dunkley had the misfortune to bury it in her finger when chopping sticks, and at the time of writing is still away with a very painful digit. Along with Mrs. Alice Brown and Rene Sharman we trust they will all soon be back with us again.

Elsie King is looking forward to Easter not for a big chocolate egg, but a new nest, as she moves into a new house then.

Gale Force Ten in Hillary Road

Arriving home to get dinner Kath Perkins was greeted with clouds of soot, as during the recent gales her chimney and TV aerial had parted company with the rest of the house. Fortunately this was soon put in order.

Darts

Mr. Bob Freelove of the Finishing Room has been elected to represent C.W. Horrell in the Rushden factories Dart League individual Championship. Best of luck Bob.

After a brilliant start to the season and heading the league, the team has recently struck a bad patch, one excuse offered was too much overtime, but really loss of form seems to be the reason.

At the time of going to press Don Green is the only player in the league who has scored a maximum this season, 180.
