Boot & Shoe Trades Journal 1920
J Darnell & Son
78-94 Kingsland
THE house of DARNELL & SON was founded nearly three-quarters of a century ago by the late Mr. Job Darnell. His first venture in London, after leaving, his native village of Rushden, was to open as a Boot and Shoe Retailer in Clerkenwell. Success soon attended his efforts, and in order to cope with his growing business larger premises became imperative.

A removal was accordingly made to Shoreditch, where in addition to the Retail Business, Mr. Darnell introduced that of Factoring.

The Darnell premises in London

This new departure soon eclipsed the retail side, and ultimately Mr. Darnell decided to devote his energies wholly and solely to Factoring. Thenceforward, the firm's turnover developed rapidly. An extensive range of Boots and Shoes was always on hand, and Retailers soon realised the advantage of being able to purchase just what they required in assorted sizes. Year in and year out the firm's activities increased and new customers were added to the existing clientele. Extensions of premises became imperative, and first one building and then another was added till they became possessed of the fine block of premises in which they are trading to-day, viz.: 78, 80, 82, 84, 86, 88, 90, 92 and 94, Kingsland Road, where they claim to carry as large and as representative a range of Footwear at all prices as the keenest or most exacting buyer can desire. Some idea of the wonderful growth of the firm's business will be gathered from a glance at illustrations of the premises—showing their extension from 1891 to the present date.

Messrs. J. Darnell and Son supply every conceivable requirement of the Boot and Shoe Retailer and spare no effort to give their customers the best possible value and service.

Note: 1841 census - Job was born about 1920, and married Sarah Ann Facer in 1845. No doubt he stocked many Rushden manufacturers' lines.
