Rushden Echo, 2nd September 1910, transcribed by Peter Brown
BOOTS FOR AMERICA a considerable amount of excitement was caused on Monday last in the neighbourhood of College Street and High Street. Upon enquiry our correspondent found the cause to be the despatching of a large consignment of goods by Messrs John Cave and Sons Limited. There were four large dray loads, consisting of 270 cases. This, we understand, is the first consignment of goods that have been shipped to the United States by any Rushden firm. Messrs John Cave have always been the pioneers in export trade, both to the Colonies and foreign countries, and this proves to be no exception. We understand that this is only half the order which the American firm of Ellet-Kendall Shoe Company, of Kansas City, U S A, placed with Messrs Cave. The other portion of the order is being rapidly proceeded with in their up-to-date factory. Before the goods were transferred from the drays to the station, the services of Mr B Powell was requisitioned and the photograph of the whole consignment taken. The boxes had to be piled on the drays in some instances 9 and 10 high.
