John Cave & Sons

Rushden Echo, 21st January 1910, transcribed by Kay Collins

Employees' Supper at Rushden - Messrs John Cave and Sons Ltd - A Record for Orders

The annual supper in connection with the Sick and Dividend Club, at the factory of Messrs John Cave and Sons Ltd., was held in the Public Hall, Rushden, on Friday evening last. Mr T W Cox (manager) presided and about 220 employees partook of an excellent repast provided by Miss Wyldes and the staff of the Waverley Hotel. The carvers were Messrs. C Wagstaff, J Cave, W E Capon, R Rice, T W Cox, C J Newton, H Tye, T Surridge, Q Whitworth, G Barwick, A Moon, W Langford, W Garner, W Bull, and G Barnes. Apologies for absences were read by the chairman from Mr A E Marlow (chairman of the directors) and Mr C Pettitt, of Harrold (director). The Chairman said he had pleasure in handing to the secretary of the Sick Club on behalf of those gentlemen the sum of £3/3/0 for the funds of the society.

The Chairman, in proposing "Success to the Sick and Dividend Club," said: It is with pleasure that I rise to propose this toast. I am glad to be associated in some small way with the club. I need hardly eulogise the aims and object of the club, suffice it to say that the primary object is to help each other. (Applause)

Mr W E Capon, in acknowledging the toast, said: The past has been

A More Successful Year

than 1908. This year we paid away £64 in sick pay, whilst in 1908 we paid away £101. This speaks volumes, not only for the health of the members, but also for the ventilation of the factory. (Cheers)

Mr T Surridge, in proposing "Success to the firm of Messrs John Cave and Sons Ltd.," spoke of the immense benefit the firm was to the town, and emphasised the need for union between employees and employers. He further spoke of the interest manifested by the directors and managers in the workpeople, and in conclusion wished them all a happy new year.

Mr C J Newton (secretary of the Company), in response, thanked Mr Surridge for his kind words and wished on behalf of the firm to reciprocate their kind wishes. He assured them that the directors were interested in their welfare and were very desirous that the business should increase. Their interest was intense and cumulative. He had pleasure in stating that they had

More Orders on Hand

at the present time than at any other time since they has been established. (Applause)

A vote of thanks to the caterers, proposed by Mr John Cave, and seconded by Mr H Tye, was enthusiastically carried.

After the supper, the first part of the evening was taken up by an excellent concert, amongst those who contributed to the programme being Mr and Mrs Colin Croall (Northampton), Mr A Henderson (Northampton), Mr Bernard Tomkins, Mr Harry Neal, and Mr G W Button. The factory choir, under the conductorship of Mr W Skinner, sang several selections in good style. Mr G Mason accompanied.

The remainder of the evening was spent in dancing, the motive music being supplied by Miss Lovell and Mr Underwood. The M.C.s were Messrs H Tye, S Denton, and G Barwick.
