Co-operative Society

The Co-op Shoe factory in Rushden was part of the Co-operative Wholesale Society (C.W.S.).

The factory had its own Fire Brigade, due to a severe risk of fire breaking out in shoe factories.

The C.W.S. also had its own news letter called "Ourselves".

Ourselves, December 1934, p46

RUSHDEN
Our football team
met Northampton Boot Works, at Northampton, on November 3rd, In the second round of the C.W.S. Cup Competition, and were beaten to the tune of seven goals to one. It was a good match, and a sportsmanlike game. The referee did not find it necessary to blow his whistle, even on a single occasion, for a foul. Undoubtedly, the best team won, and we wish Northampton higher rungs of the ladder.
Armistice Day
As has been our custom in previous years, the works were represented at the Armistice service by two of our ex-Servicemen. The usual wreath of Flanders poppies was placed on the memorial.
The sale of poppies at the works amounted to £9. 10s. 3d.

Dance in aid of party fund

A Dance was held on November 5th in aid of the children's Christmas party fund. Music was provided by Ted Smith, shoe room, and his band, and prizes were won by Mr. A. Becks and Mrs. Field, preparation. Joy Brooksbank, closing, and Edna Newell, shoe room. The dance was a success, and the kiddies' party will be much better as a result of this effort.

From H. C. Bryant, Rushden Footwear

Welcome home

Welcome back to Bob Knight, clicking, and John Johnson, order office, who have returned from H.M. Forces service.

Jack Walker

Jack Walker, finance office, has returned from hospital looking much better, and we are expecting to see him back at work soon.

Wedding wishes

Best wedding wishes to Cora Smith, shoe room, married to Jimmy Jacobson. Cora received a bolster set and bath towels from her colleagues in the department.
The bridegroom is a member of the U.S.A.A.F.

Pensioners' darts

A darts match between the retired persons' association and the Hall pensioners was held on October 28th. Our "old 'uns" did much better than last time, but were still on the losing side, as they only took nine legs against their opponents' twelve.

Tea and biscuits were served, and an enjoyable afternoon was spent by all.

Congratulations

to Mrs. Ena Downes (formerly clicking) on the birth of a daughter.
