The Advance Boot Co.

Mr G H Clarke

The War has been responsible for much that is evil, but at least it has brought to the front much latent enterprise, and the Advance Boot Co. is at least one good thing which has evolved since its commencement. Mr. G. H. Clarke is the head of the business, and under his able direction it has made considerable progress. He has nearly a quarter of a century practical experience, and is an expert in all that appertains to shoe manufacture. Mr. Clarke was with the fine old firm of Messrs. T. H. Gotch & Sons, Kettering, in his early days, and later with Messrs. B. Denton & Son, Rushden, where he gained much knowledge of the industry. The firm’s trade consists of Boys’ and Youths’ and strong Women’s footwear, for tramway conductors, field workers, etc. All these are good strong boots for hard wear. They are also producing boots for the Ministry of Munitions (High Explosives Supply) and in all they undertake satisfaction is assured.

Rushden Echo, 14th January 1921, transcribed by Kay Collins

THE annual supper and social of the Advance Boot Co., Ltd., Rushden, took place on Friday at the Athletic Club. Over 300 partook of a hot meal, served by Mr. Frank Wilkins, after which a capital programme was gone through. Mr. G. H. Clarke, managing director, was thanked for his efforts in securing work when many firms were experiencing a period of very bad trade. Refreshments were served, and dancing took place.

Extract from Council Meeting, 21st April, 1922

The Advance Boot Co.’s Factory
The Surveyor reported that he had visited and inspected the building situated off the High-street occupied by the Advance Boot Co., Ltd., as a manufactory in which persons of both sex were employed, and found that the provisions of Section 22 (1) of the Public Health Acts Amendment Act, 1890 were not complied with in the case of such building, inasmuch as it was not provided with sufficient and suitable sanitary accommodation, having regard to the number of persons employed therein. He also submitted a statement showing the existing accommodation.

It was resolved to recommend the Council to serve a notice on the occupiers requiring them to provide within 28 days an extra w.c. for the male workers.
