The Rushden Echo and Argus, 25th January, 1935, transcribed by Gill Hollis
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Wills

Golden Wedding Memories

When Church-Street Was An Open Field
Aged Father At Party

When an “Echo and Argus” reporter interviewed Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Wills, of 55, Roberts-street, Rushden, about their golden wedding anniversary, which they celebrated on Saturday in the Vestry Hall, Mr. Wills said that he could remember when Church-street and Alfred-street were open fields, and he said he could remember quite clearly the houses being built.

Mr. and Mrs. Wills were married at Rushden St. Mary’s Church, the Rev. W. A. Desney officiating, on January 15, 1885.  The bride, Miss Frances Amelia Percival, was the second daughter in a family of 13 children, and was born at Irchester, coming to Rushden at the age of 10 years.  Mr. Wills, who is now 70 years of age, was born at Harrold and started work when he was 12 years of age.

Both are keen workers at St. Mary’s Church, and both have enjoyed good health, apart from an operation which Mrs. Wills had many years ago.

In his younger days Mr. Wills was a bespoke boot repairer.  He is still a member of the Rushden Tent of Rechabites.

The couple had three children, and a son and daughter survive.  A sister of Mr. Wills is Mrs. A. Chettle, who lives next door.  A brother was killed in the War.

One of the most honoured guests at the celebratory party was Mr. Wills’ father, who has attained the great age of 91.  About 70 were present, and the tea was followed by games, recitations and dancing.
