A Westminster chiming clock from his fellow workers in the lasting dept. of Messrs John White’s factory, Higham Ferrers, was among the gifts received by Mr Reginald George Underwood, of “The Bungalow”, Court Estate, Rushden, who on Saturday married Miss Phyllis May Birkbeck, eldest daughter of Mrs and the late Mr G Birkbeck of 19, Duck-street. The bride received a bedroom chair from her fellow employees of the closing room at Messrs John Cave and Sons, Rushden.
The groom, a member of the Newton Bromswold Cricket Club, is the youngest son of Mr and the late Mrs C H Underwood.
The ceremony took place at St Mary’s Parish Church, Rushden, and was conducted by the Rector, the Rev E A Green. The bride, who was given away by Mr H E Whittington, her uncle, was dressed in a white satin gown with train and shoe to match. She wore a headdress of pleated organdie trimmed with orange blossoms and a veil, and she carried a bouquet of golden chrysanthemums. A pearl necklace was worn.
Mr E Line, of Newton Bromshold, was best man, and the organist was Mr A Clarke, A.R.C.O., who played for the hymns “Lead us Heavenly Father” and “Love Divine”.
The bridesmaids were Miss Dora E Birkbeck and Miss Nora E Dickenson, who wore Edwardian style dresses of mauve taffeta and velvet, with taffeta coatees and mauve flowered Juliet caps. They received evening bags, gifts of the groom.
After a reception at the home of the bride’s parents, the couple left for Lincoln in a car supplied by Nevilles’ Taxi Hire Service, the bride wearing a tweed striped dress and three-quarter coat of fur fabric, with brown hat and accessories.
The couple will reside at “Bryn Hedd,” Fern-road, Rushden on their return.
