Mr G R Turner

Rushden Echo, 17th October 1919, transcribed by Kay Collins

Lieut. G. R. Turner, of Rushden, who for many years has held the position of Second Officer of Rushden Fire brigade, has tendered his resignation from the Brigade. He was the efficient secretary from the formation of the brigade and had been a member of Fire Brigades at Fulham, Queen’s Elm (Brompton), Knightsbridge, and Sloane Square. Lieut. Turner has been one of the judges for Fire Brigade competitions in all parts of the county for many years. Mr. Turner has received from the National Fire Brigades Union two medals in recognition of his long service. His earliest recollection of services rendered was at the great Tooley-street fire in London, which lasted for three weeks. He was then only ten years of age. Another great fire at which Volunteer Fireman Turner did valuable work was when His Majesty’s Theatre at the bottom of Haymarket was burnt down. [part of a longer article]

Extract from Council Meeting October 1919

G R Turner
The Argus Newspaper
Mr. Turner’s Resignation — The Chairman said he had had the pleasure of working with Mr. Turner about 35 years, and could say that no living man could take a keener interest in Fire Brigade work than Mr. Turner did. The town was very much indebted to Mr. Turner, who had put in a tremendous lot of work, which had been to him a labour of love. He (the chairman) agreed with the recommendation of the committee that a record of Mr. Turner’s services be placed on the Council minutes. He moved that the recommendation be adopted, and he did it with great pleasure, because he knew what Mr. Turner had done for Fire Brigade service, not only in Rushden, but in the district.

Mr. Claridge seconded, Mr. Wilmott supported, and it was carried unanimously.
