Of great local interest, a very pretty wedding took place at St Mary’s Church, Higham Ferrers yesterday. The contracting parties were Miss Maud Elizabeth Bates, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs C W Bates, of 19 Wharf-road, Higham Ferrers, and Mr Alexander Swindall, youngest son of Councillor Tom Swindall, of Moor-road, Rushden. The bride, given away by her father, was daintily attired in ivory georgette trimmed with pearls and silk fringe, wore a veil and wreath of orange blossom (the veil being kindly lent by a sister-in-law of the bridegroom), and carried a bouquet of crimson roses.
There were two bridesmaids, Miss May Bates and Miss Ivy Bates, who wore love-in-a-mist blue georgette dresses trimmed with silver fringe, and hats of black trimmed with blue and silver sprays. Both carried dainty bouquets of chrysanthemums and wore diamond rings, the gifts of the bridegroom. The duties of best man were capably discharged by Mr Wilfred Lack, of London, a cousin of the bridegroom. Mr A E Wright, choirmaster of St Mary’s played appropriate music, including Mendelssohn’s “Wedding March.”
Following the service, which was performed by the Curate of the parish, the Rev G E Stevenson, a reception was held at the B.W.T.A. Hall, where a party of guests numbering about 60 or 70 assembled to wish the happy couple prosperity. Subsequently Mr and Mrs Swindall left by car for Kettering, when they entrained for Hastings, where the honeymoon is being spent.
Many useful and handsome presents were received. The motors were supplied by Mr H Scroxton, of Rushden, and Mr Fred Parker, of Higham Ferrers. The bridegroom is very well known locally and has just commenced business as a coal merchant at Higham in the place of Mr Dickeson.
Mr Swindall has a large number of friends in the district who will wish him and his wife every prosperity. The bride is also well known in the locality, and has the best wishes of many friends for good health and good luck.
