indenture
Apprenticeship Indenture of Ernest to John Samuel Clipson - August 1893

Ernest Pack son of Samuel and Elizabeth, was born in 1877 at Higham Ferrers. In August 1893 he was apprenticed to John Samuel Clipson, a mechanical engineer, for four years. John agreed to pay Ernest four shillings a week during the first year, five shillings a week in the second year, seven shillings a week during the third year and nine shillings a week in the final year. All three parties signed the indenture. John would also provide his board for the term, so Ernest would be living with the family in Alfred Street. Ernest went on to be a well respected engineer, like his master.

Ernest was living in Thrift Street, Higham Ferrers, when he married Jane Ann Keech, daughter of John of Leicester, on 24th December 1901, at Park Road Methodist Church.

They had three children, Cyril MacCarthy Pack born June 1903, Roland S born Dec 1912, and Reginald E in March 1921. Sadly Reginald died in the August of that year aged just 6½ months.

Rushden Echo, 9th April 1909, transcribed by Kay Collins

Presentation—On leaving the employ of the C.W.S. at Rushden in order to join the Central Machinery Co., who are removing their works from Irthlingborough to Rushden, Mr. Ernest Pack was on Friday last the recipient of a presentation from the staff at the C.W.S. factory. Mr. Ballard made the presentation on behalf of the staff and spoke in eulogistic terms of Mr. Pack’s service. The present consisted of an oak frame clock and a gold fountain pen.

The new company flourished with Ernest, Sam Scragg and Fred Hawkes. They were involved in much of the electrification in Rushden. In 1921 Sam was boarding with Ernest and his family in Rectory Road.
