For many years a boot manufacturer in the town, and one of the most respected old inhabitants, Mr. Ebenezer Wrighton passed away on Wednesday morning at his residence, 257, Wellingborough-road, Rushden, aged 77 years.

Though his health had been declining during the last twelve months, Mr. Wrighton had continued to busy himself about the town, and it was not until Tuesday that the final breakdown occurred.

Mr. Wrighton was a native of Rushden and throughout his career took a deep interest in the town’s development, himself adhering to strict principals of which he was a quiet but persistent advocate. He learnt the boot trade and became a manufacturer, occupying a factory in York-road from which he moved to Crabb-street. For a considerable period his son, the late Mr. Jesse Wrighton, who died 19 years ago, was with him in the business.

One of the oldest members and leaders of the Rushden Independent Wesleyan Church, he was for many years steward of the Benevolent Fund. He taught in the Sunday School until a few years ago, and after his retirement from active duty continued to visit the school each Sunday.

Temperance was one of his stoutest principles. When the church had a Band of Hope he took a leading part, and he also served the cause as a committee member of the Rushden Temperance Society and the local Band of Hope Union. Several years ago he raised a strong protest because the inquest on a child had been held at a public house.

In politics Mr. Wrighton was a Liberal. A widow is left, and the children are Mr. William Wrighton, Mrs. C. N. Clark and Mr. Frederick Wrighton.

The funeral will be held at Rushden on Saturday afternoon, and there is a request that no flowers should be sent.
