The Rushden Echo, 25th January 1907
Mr. George Winters

Death of a Rushden Tradesman

Succumbs to an Attack of Pneumonia

The death took place on Wednesday evening, at his residence in Alfred-street, Rushden, of Mr. George Winters, a well-known inhabitant. The deceased, who was a tailor, formerly of Church-street and latterly of Alfred-street, was apparently in his usual health up to last week. On Thursday last week he was taken ill with pneumonia, complicated with bronchitis and other affections. Dr. Baker was in attendance, but, despite all care and attention, Mr. Winters passed away on Wednesday evening, shortly before ten o’clock.

Deceased, who was 68 years of age, leaves a widow, three daughters, and two sons.

A native of Hitchin, where he was closely identified with the Wesleyan Methodist cause, he removed to Rushden about 17 years ago.  During the last few years he had been associated with the Rushden Adult School, the Home Circle, the P.S.A., the Congregational Men’s Own and similar movements.  He was a very ready speaker, very pithy and exceedingly witty, and his brief, racy addresses were always welcome at the various meetings which he attended.  He was a vice-president of the Adult School, and, as recently as last Sunday week, he was present at the meeting at the Institute and in his characteristic manner he spoke for a couple of minutes with great force and acceptance.  In various circles he will be much missed.
