Inquest - Eliza Ann Wilmott

Inquest - Mr. J. T. Parker held an inquest at the Compasses Inn, Rushden, on Saturday last, on the body of Eliza Ann Wilmott, aged 37, wife of John Wilmott, labourer, who died during her confinement; on the previous Thursday – Eliza Farrer, wife of Robert Farrer, labourer, who lived near the deceased, deposed that she was with her when she was  confined on Thursday evening.

The husband of the deceased went to fetch Mrs. Campion, a midwife, and she advised her to have a doctor, but she refused. Mrs. Campion also urged the deceased to have a doctor. Deceased said, "You needn't fetch or send for him, for I won't have him here". A girl of the family, aged about four years old, was, however, sent. Deceased had a natural confinement—a girl, now alive—but she seemed to sink afterwards. Nothing was given to her.

Rebecca Campion, wife of Geo. Campion, of Rushden, deposed that she had some conversation about attending deceased. On Thursday witness called to see her, and urged her to let a doctor attend her, and she promised her she would do so, in the presence of Mrs. Farrer.

About 7.30 her husband came to witness and asked her to go to deceased. She asked him if he had sent for a doctor. Witness went to deceased at once and found she had been confined. Witness lifted up her head at her request and saw she was dying. Everything had been done right as far as she could see. She died in about six or seven minutes. She knew on Thursday she suffered from water, and told her that it was a serious matter. Mr. Charles Owen, registered medical practitioner, of Rushden, said he did not know deceased. Mr. Thomas, his assistant informed him of the death of deceased ..... at nine o’clock on Thursday evening.........

This has been transcribed from a page of Rushden Argus that is incomplete. The local newspapers that are microfilmed at Rushden Library start at 1898, so we have no way of completing the article..............
