Mr. Henry Wheeler
Tradesman’s Death - A Noted Writer on Brass

A well-known tradesman of the town of Rushden passed away on Wednesday at 11, Church-street, in the person of Mr. Henry Wheeler, at the age of 77 years.  The deceased, who had been ill for nearly four months, had suffered great pain from an internal complaint, so that the end, which came peacefully, was a happy release.

The late Mr. Wheeler, who was a native of Oxford, had resided in Rushden for about 50 years, having carried on business as sign writer and house decorator for practically the whole of that time.  One part of his business was the writing of coffin breast-plates – of which he had written nearly 3,000 – for the principal undertakers of the district.  He was recognised as one of the finest writers of old English in the country and he was well known and highly respected throughout the county.  He was a life member of the Rushden Conservative Club and a staunch Churchman, attending the Parish Church regularly until his illness.  His wife, who was a sister of Councillor F. Knight, J.P., predeceased him about 3½ years ago.  He leaves two sons and four daughters to mourn their loss.  The funeral will take place tomorrow (Saturday) when the first portion of the obsequies will be conducted at St. Mary’s Church at 2.30p.m.  The cortege is expected to arrive at the cemetery at 3 p.m.
