Rushden Echo, 25th January 1918, transcribed by Gill Hollis
Mr. Arthur Bertram West

OBITUARY – We sincerely regret to record the death, which took place on Wednesday at 33, Albion-place, of Mr. Arthur Bertram West, at the age of 41 years.  The deceased, who was well known throughout the town, bore ten years painful illness with remarkable bravery and patience.  Before being smitten with tuberculosis, ten years ago, the late Mr. West was well known as a sportsman, having been connected with the old Rushden Beaumont Cycling Club for many years.  He was also a keen footballer, playing for some time with Rushden United Football Club.  A native of Rushden, he left the town of his birth for some years after his marriage, holding managerial positions in the bill-posting business at Portsmouth, Reading, and Camberley.  After he was taken ill he returned to Rushden in the hope that his native air would prove of benefit to him, and for some little time he was able to carry on business as a window-cleaner, but increasing weakness compelled him finally to relinquish this venture and enter a sanatorium.  All efforts on his behalf, however, proved unavailing, and, although a brave and unflagging spirit succeeded in prolonging his life, the end was inevitable, nobody realising this more than himself.  His one thought was always upon means of preventing the spread of the dread disease from which he himself suffered, and a few years ago he published a letter in our columns upon this very subject.  He leaves a widow and four children to mourn their loss, and much sympathy is felt with them in their bereavement.  In his bachelor days, the late Mr. West was on the Rushden postal staff, doing duties as postman on the Newton and Higham-park round. The funeral will take place on Saturday at 3 p.m.
