Rushden Echo, Friday, December 21, 1928, transcribed by John Collins
Death of Mrs. Thomas Webb
A Well-known Worker In Good Causes
A Heavy Loss To Rushden

Much lamented, the death occurred on Friday night last of Mrs. Agnes Webb, aged 58, wife of Mr. Thomas Webb, of 11 Victoria-road, Rushden. Mrs. Webb was born at Yelden and had lived in Rushden for 31 years. She was one of the founder-members of the Rushden St. John Nursing Division, and she always took an active interest in the work of the division. She was a member of the Rushden and District Motor Ambulance Association, on which she rendered great service. Soon after coming to Rushden Mrs. Webb joined the Rushden Women's Co-operative Guild, and she was elected secretary and was kept in the office from about 21 years ago. In that capacity she rendered great help, not only to the Co-operative Society, but to other organisations which the Guild supported. One of the chief was the Rushden Hospital Week Committee, on which Mrs. Webb represented the Guild. An annual flower-day arranged by the Guild brought in a good sum annually for the Hospital Week Committee’s funds. During the war Mrs. Webb served at the Wellingborough V.A.D. Hospital. Since that time she further devoted her services to the Co-operative movement, and she was elected to the General Committee of the Rushden society soon after the war. Since its opening in Rushden Mrs. Webb had been a member of the clinic which has been opened at the Y.M.C.A. on alternative Fridays. She was a member of St. Mary’s Church.

On the occasion of the visit of Princess Mary to Northampton recently Mrs. Webb was with the Rushden Nursing Sisters on parade for inspection. That was her last time at a public function. On the Monday following she was the victim of a seizure.

Mr. Webb is the oldest surviving postman in Rushden, having done nearly 30 years in this district. Much sympathy is felt with him in his bereavement. There are no children of the marriage.

The funeral took place on Tuesday at St. Mary’s Church and the cemetery, the Rev. G. Hatt Lipscomb (Curate) officiating.

The chief mourners were Mr. Webb (widower), Mrs. Brown (sister, Mrs. Holloway (sister), Mrs. Hodgkins (niece), Mr. J.J. Dilley (nephew), Mr. G. Holloway (cousin) , Mr. and Mrs. J. Abbott of Wellingborough (friends), Mrs. Hewitt and Mrs. Bunting (neighbours). The mother and youngest sister of the deceased were unable to attend owing to illness.
