Mr. Charles Webb

Mr. Charles Webb, whose death occurred at his home, Higham-road, Rushden, on Friday night at the age of 59 years, was a prominent footballer in pre-war days, having played for several important clubs in England and Scotland.

Beginning his football careers with the Higham Ferrers Town Club, Mr. Webb afterwards played for Rushden, Wellingborough and Kettering, and subsequently transferred to Leicester Fosse, Southampton, Dundee and another Scottish club, Airdrie, before finishing his career with Manchester City, his most important club. He enlisted in the Great War as a saddler, serving for nearly the duration, and has since held appointments as representative for several leather firms. He also took a keen interest in cricket, and had played for the Higham Ferrers Town Club. Mr Webb leaves a widow, one daughter, and one son, Mr. John Webb, who is a schoolmaster at Weston-super-Mare, and has also achieved distinction as an Association footballer in the amateur class.

The funeral took place at Rushden on Tuesday. The Rev. T. W. Gill (Park-road Baptist minister) conducted the service at the house, and afterwards at the Rushden cemetery, the mourners being Mrs. C. Webb (widow), Mr. J. O. Webb (son), Miss Peggy Webb (daughter), Messrs Fred Webb, Frank Webb and William Webb (brothers), Mrs. E. Bayes (sister), Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Lloyd (brother-in-law and sister-in-law), and Mr. Harry Jacques (friend).
