The Rushden Echo, 19th November 1909, transcribed by Kay Collins
Mr. John Warren

DEATH OF AN OLD RUSHDEN SCHOOLMASTER—€”We have to record the death, which took place at Portland, of Mr. John Warren. The deceased was the first headmaster of the National Schools at Rushden. For his first wife he married Miss Ellen Packwood, daughter of Mr. George Frederick Packwood, of Rushden. Deceased, who was very highly respected in Rushden, left here in 1883 for Portland, where he resided until his death. A Weymouth newspaper gives the following:—It is with the deepest of regret that we have to chronicle the death of the doyen of Portland's schoolmasters, Mr. John Warren, headmaster of St. George’s Schools. Mr. Warren had been suffering severely from an internal disease for several months, and although his complete recovery was deemed impossible he had on one or two occasions made such an improvement as to give the hopes that he might be spared to his family for a little longer. Of late, however, he had fallen away, his appetite entirely left him, and the disease made rapid strides until on Thursday morning, to the genuine regret of all who knew him, the end came at the age of 62.

It was on June 26th, 1883, that Mr. Warren came to Portland as headmaster of St. George's Schools, and he held the position with honour and credit to the day of his death. Of the thousands of boys, now men, who have passed through his hands not one can be found who would hear a word said against their headmaster, for whom they had respect almost amounting to veneration. In addition to his scholastic duties Mr. Warren was proud to take part in the services at the parish church, and for many years he acted as choirmaster, and he sang in the choir up to his last appearance. He was one of the most prominent members of the Tophill Conservative Club, having held office for years, and was also secretary of the local Stan-Bowkett Society. The genuine sympathy of the whole inland will go out to Mrs. Warren in her deep sorrow, and to her family in their loss.
