The Rushden Echo and Argus, 27th February, 1942, transcribed by Gill Hollis
Mr. C. G. Ward, Rushden

An old Rushden tradesman, Mr. Charles Godfrey Ward, who will ever be recalled by the name “Ward’s Corner,” the spot in Rushden where for many years his father and he had carried on business as grocers, passed away at midnight on Tuesday after six months’ severe illness. He was 78 years of age and had resided at “Clevelands,” Hayway, during his years of retirement.

Born at Higham Ferrers, where his father, Mr. Thomas Ward, first started business in the shop now occupied by Messrs. Colton Bros., Mr. Ward came to Rushden when his father took the business in High-street, and he himself took over control at his parent’s death in 1890, retiring about 12 years ago.

A member of the old Rushden Choral Society from the very early days, he was always interested in music and was himself a tenor. His name appeared in last week’s “Echo and Argus,” in some biographical notes prepared by the late Mr. J. T. Linnitt, in connection with Rushden’s first Rugby football club, of which he was a playing member. Another sporting interest of his was bowls, and for many years he was a member of the Rushden Town Bowling Club.
