Sarah Ann Underwood
Fatal Accident at Rushden
Sad Death of an Old Lady – While trying to Save Her Grandchild

An inquest was held at the Unicorn Inn, Grove-street, Rushden, on Tuesday morning, before Mr J C Parker, Deputy Divisional Coroner, touching the death of Sarah Ann Underwood, aged 78 years, of 37, Robert-street, Rushden, who died on Monday last. Mr T Wilmott was foreman of the jury.

Annie Underwood, daughter-in-law, with whom deceased lived, said that on July 21st her mother-in-law was in the yard at the rear of the home with witness’s little boy, aged 2½ years. She heard her neighbour, Mrs Blackwell, call out. On running out, shoe found her mother-in-law on the ground. Deceased said the little boy took hold of her dress and she fell. Deceased was removed to bed, and Dr Greenfield was called in.

Mrs Blackwell (a neighbour) said she heard deceased call out about 11.30a.m. Witness found deceased lying on the ground. Deceased told her that the lad took hold of her frock, and in trying to save him she fell. It was a pure accident.

Dr Greenfield said the deceased had fractured her right hip. There were no other injuries, but deceased had suffered with her joints for years and was not good on her feet. She progressed well until a few days ago, when her mind seemed to fail and she refused her food. In his opinion, death was accelerated by the accident.

Verdict “Accidental death”.

The jurors gave their fees to the funds of the Red Cross Fete at Rushden.
