Rushden Postman’s Tragic Death

Six Weeks after Retirement - A Long Record Recalled

  Within six weeks of his retirement, after the completion of 38 years in the service of the Post Office, the death occurred on Sunday afternoon, after only one day’s illness of Mr. Herbert Tomlin, of 8, York-road, Rushden.  Aged 60 years the deceased was a native of Barnwell, and had lived in Rushden 29 years.

  Mr. Tomlin entered upon his duties as a postman on October 20th, 1890, at Oundle, and in March, 1900 was transferred to Rushden where he had been ever since.  At that time the Post Office staff were accommodated at 35, High-street, on premises now occupied by the Misses Mobbs.  The late Mr. Tomlin had seen service under a number of post-masters including the late Mr. E. Hewitt, Mr. S. Field, Mr. J. S. Keeling and Mr. F. R. Roberts the present post-master.  On his retirement in March last Mr. Tomlin was presented with a handsome oak timepiece.

  A Widow and Two Sons are Bereaved

  The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon, the Rev. Bernard J. Harris (Park-road Wesleyan Minister), conducting a short service at the home prior to the interment in the cemetery.  The mourners were : Mrs. H. S. Tomlin (widow), Mr. H. G. Tomlin and Mr. A. Tomlin (sons), Mrs. A. C. Tomlin (daughter-in-law), Miss G. Tomlin (sister), Mr. and Mrs. Winfield (brother-in-law and sister-in-law), Mrs. Linnell (sister-in-law), Mr. T. Cooper (brother-in-law), Mrs. Cooper (sister-in-law), Mr. C. Pheasant (brother-in-law), Mr. G. Pheasant (nephew), Mr. and Mrs. H. Linnell (nephew and niece), Miss L. Howe, Mrs. Green, and Mr. A. Gadsby (friends), Mr. E. R. Roberts (postmaster), Mr. A. Butcher (representing the clerical staff), Messrs. F. E. Wood, Prigmore, and J. Lovell (representing the staff), Messrs. L. Eady, C. Percival, S. W. Brooker, and J. Sherwood (postmen), and Mr. J. Mitton (representing the clerical staff, Wellingborough).

  There were wreaths as follows :

  Mrs. Tomlin and family desire to thank all friends for their numerous inquiries, help, and sympathy in their sudden bereavement, and also for floral tributes.
