Rushden Echo 16th September 1921, transcribed by Susan Manton
Mr. George Thompson

Sudden Death at Rushden
Factory Employees Sad Collapse
Out of Work All the Year
Inquest Not Necessary

A sad occurrence took place about 10.30am on Wednesday at Messrs. Eaton & Co’s Factory, Sartoris Road, Rushden. An employee in the finishing room, Mr. George Thompson, aged 50, collapsed without having shown signs of illness. He was carried into the fresh air, and brandy was sent for, but before anything could be done for him he passed away- within five minutes of his falling down.

The Police were informed and the body was taken to the Oakley Arms to await the Coroner’s instructions.

According to a statement by a son of the deceased, the man had been out of work from last Christmas until Monday afternoon when he started on a temporary job at Messrs. Eatons. He told his son on Tuesday evening that he found the work hard after his long period of unemployment, but he was very glad to have got in work again.

The deceased had been in lodgings with Mrs. Ellis, 18, Bedford Road for the past 15 years. Mrs. Ellis says he had never complained of his heart, or any other illness.

Mr. Thompson, who was a native of Rushden, leaves two sons, one of whom is married and lives in Yorkshire and the other in Rushden.

Dr. Greenfield having certified the cause of death, the Coroner has decided that an inquest is not necessary.

The funeral took place this (Friday) afternoon.
