A man who made his name in the Kettering and Northampton districts about forty years ago as a successful professional sprinter, died on Tuesday, January 10, after about nine months’ illness. He was Mr Arthur Tew, aged 62 years, of 25, Pytchley-road, Rushden.
One of Mr Tew’s proudest recollections was the winning of seven golden sovereigns at a Kettering professional meeting.
Mr Tew was born at Rushden, and had lived in the town all his life. He had been a member of the Athletic Club for over 40 years, and at the time of his death was a member of the West End Club.
A widow, Mrs A Tew, and two sons, Mr F Tew and Mr W Tew, are bereaved.
The funeral took place on Thursday, when a service was conducted at the house by the Rev. Frederick John (Park-road Methodist Church). The mourners were: Mrs A Tew and Mr E Tew (widow and son), Mr W Tew and E Tew (son and daughter-in-law), Mr and Mrs F Tassell (brother-in-law and sister), Mr and Mrs W Tew (brother and sister-in-law), Mr and Mrs W Norman (brother-in-law and sister), Mr R Tew and Miss A Clayton (nephew and sister).
