Mr. John Blott Tear

Sudden Death of a Rushden Man

Mr. J. B. Tear Passes Away – Valvular Disease of The Heart

The death took place suddenly at Bedford on Tuesday of Mr. John Blott Tear, aged 77, formerly of Newton-road, Rushden, who had been residing with his daughter, Mrs. C. Jaques, of the Fox and Hounds, Goldington-road, Bedford.

An inquest was held at the Bedford Borough Police Station on Wednesday evening, before Mr. C. C. Bell (Borough Coroner), touching the death of Mr. Tear.

Dr. Lloyd said that on Tuesday afternoon he was called to the “Fox and Hounds,” and there saw deceased; life was extinct.  Witness was informed that he had been suffering from valvular disease of the heart, and in his opinion death was due to heart failure, due to distortion of the stomach, deceased having had an exceptionally hearty meal at mid-day.

Sarah Ellen Jaques, wife of Mr. C. Jaques, and daughter of deceased, said her father was a retired shoemaker.  He seemed quite as usual on Tuesday, and had a very hearty dinner.  He had had no doctor for seven years, and was then attended because the doctor said his heart was very bad.  On Tuesday he had been in the garden tidying up, and came to dinner about one o’clock.  Deceased went into the garden at 2.20, and about 3.40 witness went to call him, but he did not answer.  She then saw him in the wash-house, and then ran into the house and told her husband she thought her father was dead.  Witness informed the police and sent for a doctor.

The jury returned a verdict that deceased died from valvular disease of the heart, due to eating a hearty meal.
