Rev. Reginald Taylor
1921 - 2016

Rev Taylor

A large congregation gathered at Rushden High Street Church for a Thanksgiving service in memory of Rev. Reginald Taylor who died on 24th February 2016.

Reg was born at Kings Lynn, Norfolk on 6th December 1921 and educated at St. James School. It was when a group of Cliff College Trekkers came to the area that he committed his life to Christ.

In 1941 Reg joined the Navy and served in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, taking part in the invasion in North Africa, Italy and also the Normandy landings on D-Day.

After the war from 1946, Reg spent three memorable years at Cliff College. After pastoring a number of churches in the north of England he joined the Wesleyan Reform Union in 1956 and went to Hucknall, Notts, with his wife Marjorie and their young daughter Ruth. In 1962 on 14th April the Taylor family were welcomed into ministry at the Rushden High Street Church, Northants.

During his ministry at High Street he was responsible for arranging campaigns led by the well-known Cliff College evangelist Tom Butler, Rev. Richard Bennett and also John Knight, who used his artistic skills to highlight the Gospel. These were special times for many, when personal commitments were made to follow Christ. A good number of those who became Christians during these years remain active Leaders and Members in the church today.

In 1972 Rev. Taylor became the second minister from Rushden High St. Church to become President of the Wesleyan Reform Union.

Another pleasure for Reg and his wife Marjorie was to be House Parents for the first of the WRU youth holidays held at Avon Tyrrell - situated in the New Forest near Bournemouth.

In the later years of his ministry at High Street, an exchange was arranged for the Taylors to go to Nebraska, USA, whilst Rev. and Mrs. Dwight Ganzel came to Rushden, for several weeks.

Reg Taylor retired from the ministry at Rushden High Street in 1985 when some 250 people came to the farewell celebrations on 26th and 27th October; during this weekend he was made Pastor Emeritus and given lifelong honorary membership of the church. He then served eight years as Minister of the Finedon Church before retiring to Bedfordshire.

During their long and fruitful ministry, a great many folks and families have reasons to be thankful to our Father God for the loving and faithful witness of both Reg and Marjorie, and for their pastoring concern and care of us all.
