Funeral of Edward Stevens of Rushden

After only a week’s illness, a ten years old Rushden boy, Edward Stevens, died on Saturday from pneumonia.

His parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Stevens, of 2 Dell Place, Rushden lost their fourteen months old baby last year. Edward attended Newton Road School.

The funeral took place at Rushden Cemetery on Tuesday, a service at the house being conducted by the Rev. J. W. Brough.

The mourners included Mr. and Mrs. W. Stevens (father and mother), Mr. and Mrs. H. Stevens (grandfather and grandmother), Mrs. Callis, Wellingborough, Mrs. Wheeler, Rushden, Mrs. F Stevens, Rushden, Mrs. S. Thompson, Wellingborough (aunts). Mrs. Barron (grandmother was unable to attend owing to indisposition.

The wreaths bore the following inscriptions:

In loving memory of our darling Teddy from his heart-broken Mum and Dad – “Had He asked us well we know. We should cry ‘o spare this blow.’ Yet with streaming tears should pray, Lord we love him let him stay.”

To darling Teddy from Grampy, Grandma and Uncles and Aunties 62, Washbrook Road “This cup was bitter, the sting severe. To part with one we loved so dear. The trial is hard, we’ll not complain. But trust in Heaven we shall meet again.”

In loving memory of dear Teddy, from his sorrowing Grandma, Auntie Eve and Auntie Hat. “After much suffering. Safe in the arms of Jesus.”

To dear Teddy. In loving memory from Uncle Fred, Auntie Edie and Cousin Barty “Thou art gone but not forgotten. Never shall thy memory fade. Fondest thought will ever linger. Around the spot where thou art laid.”

In loving memory of Teddy from Uncle, Auntie and Cousin, London. “Too precious a flower on earth to blossom.”

In loving memory of my dear Teddy “Sleep on and be at rest in the Lord” from Cousin Gwen.

With heartfelt sympathy from Aunt Lizzie and family “Life’s work well done. Life’s race well run. Life’s crown well won. Now comes rest.”

To dear Teddy from his playmate Phillip.

In loving remembrance from his Master and Staff, Newton Road School.

With token of sincere sympathy from Headmaster and Staff Newton Road School.

With deepest sympathy from Mrs. Osborne.

With deepest sympathy from Mrs. Freeman and Winnie, Irchester Road.

With Heartfelt sympathy, to dear Teddy from his playmates, Dennis, Bobby, Betty and Eileen. “Suffer little children to come unto me.”

With deepest sympathy from Neighbours “There’s a friend for little children above the bright blue sky. Where every little pilgrim shall rest eternally.”

Messrs. T. Swindall and Sons carried out the funeral arrangements.
