Mr. Charles Smith
School Founder Dies

A founder of the Rushden Adult School, Mr. Charles Smith of 54, Higham Road, Rushden, died on Wednesday evening at the age of 84. He had been ailing for about a year.

Mr. Smith was born at Higham Ferrers and came to Rushden 55 years ago to go into business as a chemist, at premises now occupied by Messrs. Boots. He was associated with Smith and Cottingham, eye specialists.

A keen temperance worker he had been a member of the Park Road Methodist Church since his marriage, the year he arrived in Rushden.

A widow Mrs. Bertha Smith and two sons in America, Mr. Eric Smith and Mr. Gordon Smith, survive. Other relatives include: Mr. R. T. Norman and Mr. S. P. Norman, nephews both of Wellingborough and a niece, Miss I. M. Norman.

The funeral service will be at the house on Saturday with interment at Higham Ferrers Cemetery at 2.30. The service will be conducted by the Rev. J. Renison (minister of the Rushden Independent Wesleyan Church).
