Death of a Rushden Resident
Mr. William Scroxton Passes Away

An Ardent Politician


It is with regret that we record the death of Mr. William Scroxton, a well-known and respected inhabitant of Rushden.

Mr. Scroxton was seized with an apoplectic fit on Monday night, Feb. 26. and after five days’ illness, died on Saturday morning at 11 o’clock.

Deceased, who lived at 20, North-street, had not worked in a factory for a considerable time, and had for the last few months been employed in Mr. Hyde’s garden. Mr. Scroxton was well-known through his connection with horticulture and the great interest he took in flowers. He was one of the pioneers of the flower show in connection with the Working Men’s Club, and for a considerable time occupied the position of president of that function, carrying out his duties with great assiduity and efficiency.

A native of Podington, Mr. Scroxton was married in the Parish Church there 42 years ago by the Rev. Mr. Gildart.

Deceased was a member of the Rushden and Higham Ferrers branch of the I.L.P., and was an ardent Socialist. He leaves a widow, five sons, and four daughters, and has one brother, who resides in Rushden. Mr. Scroxton had lived in Rushden just over 31 years.

The Funeral

took place on Wednesday at 3 o’clock, the body being enclosed in an oak coffin with massive brass fittings, which bore the inscription:-

WILLIAM SCROXTON,
Died March 4, 1911,
Aged 65 years.

The Rev. E. J. K. Wright conducted a service in the cemetery chapel and afterwards read the committal service at the graveside.

The mourners were:- Mrs. Scroxton (Widow) and Mr. William Scroxton (son), Mr. Ben Scroxton and Mrs. Noble (son and eldest daughter), Mr. Harry Scroxton and Miss Lily Scroxton (son and daughter), Mr. I. Scroxton and Mrs. Green (son and daughter), Mr. H. Scroxton and Mrs. Groome (youngest son and daughter), Mr. Ben Scroxton and Mrs. William Scroxton (brother and daughter-in-law), Mr. Noble and Mrs. Ben Scroxton (son-in-law and sister-in-law), Mr. Groome and Mrs. H. Scroxton ( son-in-law and daughter-in-law), Misses Ada and Doris Scroxton (grandchildren), Mr. Hazeldine and Mr. Groome (friend and son-in-law).

Wreaths were received from:- Widow and children, harp with broken string; I.L.P. and S.D.P., composed of red and white flowers; Mr. and Mrs. Noble; Mrs. Green; Mrs. Groome; from the neighbours; sprays from two little children, M. and B. Abrahams; globe from the Working Men’s Club.
