Rushden Echo, 26th February 1915, transcribed by Gill Hollis
Mr. Benjamin Scroxton

The death of a well-known and highly respected resident of Rushden took place on Friday last at 9, Denmark-road, in the person of Mr. Benjamin Scroxton, at the age of 67 years. A native of Podington, the late Mr. Scroxton had been associated with the Park-road Baptist Church for very many years, at one time filling the position of sexton to that place of worship, a position which he held for 12 years. For many years past the deceased had been a sufferer from periodical attacks of asthma, but managed to keep at his work until three weeks prior to his death, when bronchitis and subsequently dropsy set in. The end came peacefully on Friday at about 12.45 p.m. Deceased leaves a widow. The funeral took place on Tuesday in the burial ground of the Old Top Meeting in the presence of a great many sympathisers. The first portion of the obsequies was conducted in the Old Chapel, in accordance with the wish of the deceased, by the Rev. H. J. Horn, who also officiated at the graveside. Two of the late Mr. Scroxton’s favourite hymns, “How blest the righteous when he dies” and “Rock of Ages,” were sung. Mr. Horn spoke in appreciative terms of the late Mr. Scroxton. The coffin was of polished elm with brass fittings, and bore the inscription:-
