It is with much regret we have to announce the death, which took place suddenly on Friday last at 197 Wellingborough-road, Rushden, of Mr Thomas John Sayer. Mr. Sayer had been ill with internal troubles for two or three weeks, but his death came very suddenly and was a great shock to his friends and relatives. In his last minutes deceased got out of bed, dressed himself, and walked downstairs, but his exertion caused heart failure, Mr Sayer suddenly falling back dead in his chair. Dr Davies was summoned, but he found life extinct. Mr Sayer had been a wonderfully energetic man, and it was not until two weeks ago that he ceased work entirely, being in the employ of the Rushden Urban District Council, for whom he had worked for 30 years. The deceased was a quiet, unobtrusive man, and was respected and loved by all with whom he came in contact. A native of Hinwick, Mr Sayer’s experiences with horses was large, and before his residence in Rushden he had been horsekeeper for the then “Squire” Orlebar. After serving Mr Orlebar for some years Mr Sayer took up a similar position with Mr G H Skinner, and was also in the employ of the late Mr C Knight. He had reached the grand age of 80, and in another week would have attained the age of 81. Mr and Mrs Sayer and family removed to Higham from Hinwick, and subsequently to Rushden 48 years ago, when fields were in the place of Wellingborough-road and Rushden was not half the size it is now. During his residence in the town Mr Sayer had made many acquaintanceships, and he was very much respected by his fellow-workmates for the Rushden Urban Council. There are left to mourn their loss the widow, four daughters, and two sons—Mrs S Wood, Miss A Sayer, and Mrs F Kingham (who is in New Zealand), and Mr J Sayer and Mr G W Sayer. The funeral took place on Tuesday, the Rev Ion Carrol, Vicar of St Peter’s Church, performing the ceremony at the church and at the graveside. Owing to illness, Mrs Sayer was unable to attend the funeral service. The mourners were Mrs. S Wood (daughter), Mr J Sayer (son), Miss A Sayer (daughter), Mr G W Sayer (son), Miss Emily Sayer (daughter), Mr Charlie Sayer (brother), Mrs J Sayer, Mrs G W Sayer (daughters-in-law), Miss E Sayer, Mrs P Sanders, Miss G Wood (granddaughters), and Mr Henry Cooper (nephew). There were also present at the service in the church, representing the Rushden Urban District Council, Mr W B Madin (Surveyor) and Mr E Robinson (foreman of the department in which Mr Sayer worked). Besides a cross from Mrs Sayer and family, wreaths were also sent from Mr and Mrs J Sayer and family, Miss Emily Sayer, Mr and Mrs Charlie Sayer and family (Irchester Grange), and Mr and Mrs C Robinson. The coffin was of polished elm with brass fittings, and was inscribed: “Thomas John Sayer. Died January 9, 1925, Aged 80.” Mr Arthur Sanders was the undertaker. Mrs Sayer and the family of the late Mr Sayer wish to thank sincerely all kind friends for sympathy sent to them in their heavy bereavement, and also for the floral tributes.
