Rushden Echo, 7th February 1908, transcribed by Kay Collins
Mr. Thomas Sargent

Death of an Old Resident—Keen regret will be felt throughout Rushden at the death, which took place early on Sunday morning, after a long and painful illness, of Mr. Thomas Sargent, of Crabb-street, Rushden. The deceased, who was well over 70 years of age, was of a very sunny disposition, and his unexhaustible fund of geniality and friendliness made him a universal favourite. Particularly was he devoted to the young people, and in return the young people were attached to him. In fact, he was known to hundreds of people by the familiar designation of “Uncle Tom.” Mr Sargent was intensely fond of music, and at one time he was a member of the Old Baptist Choir. While his health permitted, he was a regular attendant at the Baptist Church, but for the last two or three years he had suffered acutely from cancer. He leaves a widow but no children. The widow is sister of Mrs. Joseph Darnell, of High-street South. The deceased was the last surviving brother of the late Mr. William Sargent. The funeral took place yesterday.
