The late Mr. John Sargent
Funeral at Rushden - A Temperance Veteran

The funeral of the late Mr. John Sargent, of Park-road, Rushden, for 30 years rate collector, took place on Monday afternoon, a short service being conducted at the house by the Rev. R. C. Law (Baptist), who also officiated at the cemetery.

The family mourners were: Mrs. Sargent (widow) Mr. Herbert Sargent, M.A. (son), Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Sargent (son and daughter-in-law), Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Harris (son-in-law and daughter), Mr. John Harris (grandson), Miss Phyllis Harris (grand-daughter), Master Ewart Sargent (grand son), Mrs. A. Brooks and Mrs. Pingstone (nieces), Mr. George Bayes and Mr. C. E. Bayes (nephews), Miss Brawn, Miss Kersey and Miss Bates (friends).

Amongst other representatives present at the graveside were the following members of the Rushden Temperance Society: Mr. John Claridge, J.P., C.C., (who also represented Mr. Thornley, and the United Kingdom Alliance), Mr. Joseph Knight, Mr. and Mrs. William Clark, Mr. Charles Green, Mrs. T. C. Clarke, Mr. J. F. Knight, Mr. Ben Vorley, Mr. Charles White, Mr. E. Wrighton, Mrs. M. Stapleton, Miss E. Denton, Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Bettles, Mr. C. G. Cunnington and Mrs. T. Tailby. The Waverley Hotel Directors were represented by Messrs. J. T. Colson, W. B. Sanders, A. Clayton, W. Clark, and W. H. Darnell; Rate Collector’s Office, Mr. H. Lack; Mr. C. W. Wing representing the clerk of the Urban Council; Mr. W. B. Madin (Surveyor); Mr. D. Darnell and Mr. Fred Corby (Baptist Church); Messrs. J. S. Mason, C. L. Bradfield, A. J. Potton, C. E. Knight, and others. The coffin was of plain oak with brass fittings, and bore the following inscription:-

JOHN SARGENT,
Died February 12th, 1920
Aged 75 years.

There were no flowers by request. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Messrs. Whittington and Tomlin.

A 1906 receipt for a grave space and burial fees signed by John Sargent, cemetery registrar, and rate collector for 30 years.

The grave in B section and numbered 768, and was for Nathaniel Skinner who had died aged 47. His wife Sarah was buried in the same grave in 1938 aged 82.
