The Rushden Echo, 1st April, 1921, transcribed by Gill Hollis
Rushden Residents Pass Away
The First Local Old Age Pensioner
An Urban Councillor Bereaved - An Octogenarian’s Demise

We much regret to record the death which took place on Wednesday of Mr. George Smith, aged 86, who had been living with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Elliott, of 19, Midland-road, Rushden. The deceased, a native of Harrold, Beds, had lived in Rushden about 32 years. He frequently attended the Park-road Baptist Church, of which he was a member. He was taken suddenly ill on Saturday, and in spite of all that medical skill and nursing attention could do, he passed away four days later. The deceased was the first Rushden resident to receive the old age pension, of which fact he has always been justifiably proud. He leaves one daughter, three sons, and numerous grand-children and great-grandchildren.

The death occurred at the Almshouses, Wellingborough-road, on Saturday, of Mrs. Charlotte Cave, aged 81, widow of the late Mr. George Cave, following a period of failing health. She had long been a member of the Park-road Baptist Church and used to attend the B.W.T.A. meetings when her health permitted. She was about the house as recently as the day before her death.

With much regret we have to record the death, which took place on Monday, of Mrs. Bazeley, wife of Councillor W. Bazeley, J.P., vice-chairman of the Rushden Urban Council. Mrs. Bazeley had for many months been a great sufferer from heart trouble, and was rarely free from pain. She bore her illness with much fortitude. Deep sympathy is felt with the bereaved husband and relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Bazeley were the recipients of valuable gifts on the retirement of Mr. Bazeley from the secretaryship of the Rushden Branch of the Boot and Shoe Operatives’ Union.

Mrs. Mary Ann Carter, of 58, Glassbrook-road, died on Monday, aged 74, after being ill only five days with acute bronchitis. A native of Byfield, she had lived in Rushden 34 years, and was highly respected. Her husband died three years ago. She leaves one son, Mr. Charles Carter, and four daughters – Mrs. H. Fairey, Mrs. F. Lovell (Brixworth), Mrs. J. Pratt, and Mrs. J. Taylor (Newcastle-on-Tyne).
