Rushden Echo, 20th December 1918, transcribed by Kay Collins
Jack Nuyts

River Fatality—A sad drowning fatality occurred in the Nene at Wellingborough on Sunday afternoon. A number of lads were playing near the Staunch on the Wellingborough side of the river, and one of them, a lad of eight years, named Jack Nuyts, the son of Belgians living at Irchester, whilst attempting to cross the lock gates slipped into the stream, which is now very high. His comrades at once raised the alarm, and although attempts were made to rescue the lad, he was carried down the stream, and his body was taken out of the water near the Black Bridge by William Priest of Irchester, who tried artificial respiration, but without avail.

The funeral took place at Irchester Church, on Wednesday, with the rites of the Roman Catholic Church. Father Malone (Wellingboro’) was the officiating priest. Belgian refugees from all parts of the district attended, and there were touching scenes at the graveside.
