Rushden Echo, 30th March 1928, transcribed by Kay Collins

Mrs. Flora Elizabeth Miller

Y.M.C.A. Loses a Valued Worker
Collapse at Whist Drive

With tragic and unexpected suddenness, the death occurred at 4a.m. on Tuesday of Mrs. Flora Elizabeth Miller, wife of Mr. Harold Oliver Miller, of 47 High-street, Rushden.

Mrs. Miller, who was 50 years of age, was one of the most active workers of the Y.M.C.A. Women’s Auxiliary. She had been M.C. at all the little whist drives which have been held during the afternoons in the winter session. On Monday she was M.C. as usual, and, the whist drive over, she had joined the other ladies at tea, when she said quite suddenly, “Oh, I do feel giddy.” Mrs. Muxlowe and Mrs. Woodward assisted Mrs. Miller into the ante-room, and she walked with them arm-in-arm. Mrs. A. Flavell offered Mrs. Miller the use of her car to get her home, but Mrs. Miller said, “I cannot see,” and further said she was afraid she was “going.”

Fortunately Lady Superintendent Miss W. Clipson, of the Rushden St. John Ambulance Nursing Division, was on the scene, and she rendered efficient first-aid. As soon as it had become clear that the illness was worse than a dizzy spell, Dr. Muriset was summoned, and he—and later Dr. McCabe—quickly arrived. Mr. Miller and Nurse Watson were also sent for.

The Rushden motor-ambulance was procured and Mrs. Miller, quite conscious, was conveyed home. There Nurse Watson was waiting, and she and Miss Clipson got Mrs. Miller to bed. She did not regain consciousness.

In addition to her work for the Y.M.C.A., Mrs. Miller has been one of the most valued workers for the Rushden Women’s Liberal Association, having been a member of the Executive Committee. She also rendered great help for a local sick and benevolent fund organised by Rushden ladies, Rushden Town Tennis Club, and other organisations. One little son, Jackie, is left, besides the husband, with both whom the deepest sympathy is felt. Mrs. Miller (formerly a Miss Leigh) was a teacher at the Newton-road School before her marriage.

Mr. Miller is well known as Collector of Taxes under the Inland Revenue. He is head of the Rushden office of Messrs J. T. Parker and Son, solicitors, Wellingborough, Clerk of the Parish Council of Wymington, a Freemason, etc.

The Funeral

There was a large company of friends in St,. Mary’s Church yesterday afternoon at the first part of the funeral service, the interment being at the cemetery. The Rector (the Rev. P. E. Robson) officiated.
