Rushden Echo & Argus, 1st January 1932, transcribed by Kay Collins

Mr S Michell
The death has occurred of a well-known former Rushden resident in the person of Mr Stephen Michell, who passed away at Hayle, Cornwall, on Christmas Eve. Aged 81, Mr Michell resided at Rushden for several years prior to 1906, and was in that period secretary to Messrs John Cave and Sons Ltd., boot manufacturers, also taking prominent part in the affairs of the Park-road Wesleyan Church. He took great interest in the building of the new chapel, and his writings on “Methodism in the Higham Ferrers Circuit” ran for many months in the “Rushden Echo” and were much appreciated. One of his daughters resides at Rushden and is the wife of Mr A T Watson, manager of the Rushden and Higham Ferrers Gas Company. Mr Michell had an interesting and varied career, spending most of his years in his native Cornwall. Before moving to Rushden he was general secretary to a Cornish firm, and in 1906 went out to British Columbia, returning to England some 20 years ago. His last post – relinquished owing to failing health and advancing years – was as a member of “The Cornishman” staff. Holding various Wesleyan offices over a period of 56 years, Mr Michell remained a trustee of the Rushden chapel until two years ago. He was keenly interested in mining machinery, was the author of a work on mining drainage, and contributed an article to the Victorian History of Cornwall.

The funeral took place on Monday in the churchyard at Phillack. Mr A T Watson, of Rushden, was among the mourners who attended. Besides the widow, four sons and two daughters are left.

Mrs A S Michell, formerly of Rushden
The death occurred suddenly at Rushden on Wednesday, of Mrs Annie S Michell, aged 78 years, of Hayle, Cornwall, who was on a visit to her daughter, Mrs A T Watson, of Shirley-road. The deceased lady was the widow of Mr Stephen Michell, who passed away in Cornwall on Christmas Eve. Mr Michell spent most of his years in Cornwall, and was for a time in British Columbia, but he resided in Rushden for several years, and during that time was secretary to Messrs John Cave and Sons Ltd., boot manufacturers, and prominent at the Park-road Wesleyan Church. Mrs Michell, too, was an active worker at the Wesleyan Church during the whole of her stay in Rushden from 1901 to 1908. She was also very closely associated with the B.W.T.A. movement during that time, and held many offices, being for a term County Secretary. Four sons and two daughters are bereaved.
