Rushden Echo, 16th August 1918
Emily Mason
Death of Mrs. John S. Mason

Well-Known Rushden Families Bereaved

With deep sorrow we have to record the death, which took place at one o’clock on Saturday morning, of Mrs. Mason, wife of Mr. John S. Mason, of Hayway, Rushden, auctioneer and estate agent.  The deceased lady was the only daughter of the late Mr. Ebenezer Claridge and Mrs. Claridge, of Hayway, Rushden.  She suffered from an old-standing complaint, but up to Thursday last week was apparently quite as well as usual.  During Friday alarming symptoms developed.  An operation was performed by Dr. H. S. Baker and Dr. Nash, of Bedford, but the patient never regained consciousness.

The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon at the Rushden cemetery in the presence of many sympathisers, the Rev. P. E. Robson (Rector) conducting the obsequies.  Those present at the graveside included Messrs. A. H. Sartoris, J.P., J. Claridge, J.P., C.C., F. Knight, J.P., C. Claridge, G. Denton, Jun., W. B. Madin, C. J. Hedley, F. C. Woodward, W. Packwood, W. M. Hensman, D. Darnell, C. L. Bradfield, H. Sargent, T. Watson, T. Maddock (Wellingborough), C. F. Tall, Arthur Cave, T. A. Baker, and J. Radburne, D. H. S. Baker, Dr. and Mrs. D. G. Greenfield, Mr. and Mrs. R. Tusting, Mr. and Mrs. G. Denton, sen., Mr. and Mrs. R. Marriott, Mrs. G. Selwood, Mrs. C. White and the Rev. F. G. White, Mrs. J. Knight.

The coffin, which was of unpolished oak with brass fittings, bore the inscription:

EMILY MASON,
Born December 2nd, 1869,
Died August 10th, 1918.

The grave was lined with ferns, laurel, geraniums, achilla and ageratum, the work being carried out by Mr. T. Smith, gardener to Mrs. Ebenezer Claridge.

The family mourners comprised Mr. J. S. Mason (husband), Mr. Oliver Claridge (brother), Mr. G. H. Claridge (brother), and Mr. George S. Mason (brother-in-law).

By request, only the intimate members and friends of the family sent wreaths.

Messrs. Whittington and Tomlin were the undertakers.
