Sudden Death of Ald A E Marlow
Heart Seizure in London – Rushden Business Associations
Mr C L Bradfield’s Tribute

With poignant regret we have to announce the sudden death of Alderman A E Marlow, J.P., who had a heart seizure in London on Tuesday morning, and died at the Langham Hotel, at the age of 52. Mr Marlow was the head of the important boot manufacturing businesses carried on at St James’s and at the Mounts Factory, Northampton, and was chairman of the directors of Messrs John Cave and Sons Ltd., boot manufacturers, of Rushden.

On Monday Mr Marlow was in his usual health. He attended the luncheon of the Rotary Club of Northampton (of which he was past-president), and joined in the discussions with more than his accustomed vigour. Afterwards he went to a Chamber of Commerce meeting. On Monday evening Mr and Mrs Marlow went to London and stayed at the Langham Hotel, and Mr Marlow was expecting to attend meetings of the Boot and Shoe Federation on Tuesday. During the night he suffered acute pain and thought it was indigestion. Later he became unconscious and passed away in the early hours of Tuesday morning before a doctor could arrive.

Mr Marlow was a native of Northampton [more is in the newspaper]

Rushden Tribute

At a meeting of Rushden Coalitionists on Tuesday evening Alderman C W Horrell referred feelingly to Mr Marlow’s death. He reminded the meeting that the initiative of the invitation to Mr Marlow to contest the Wellingborough Division came from Rushden. They all deeply sympathised with Mrs Marlow and the family in the loss they had sustained.

Mr C L Bradfield also alluded to the death of Mr Marlow, and said:

Intimately acquainted and connected as some of have been with Mr Marlow we cannot but feel almost stunned by the suddenness of his departure from our midst, and yet even at this early stage we feel we must make some attempt to convey our deepest sympathy with Mrs Marlow and the family in their sad bereavement. Mr Marlow has indeed gone from a home and circle where he was fondly loved. Very recently Mr Marlow was our prospective candidate for the representation of this Division in Parliament. I was one, amongst others, who first approached him on this matter. His acceptance was not long delayed, and with no affectation of seeming reluctance, and from the statement of his position at that very first interview he never once swerved. Indeed the conduct of his too brief candidature was a fine example of consistency, of expression of opinion, and fidelity to what he conceived to be in the best interests of the community. Mr Marlow was a Northamptonshire man; he was that intensely, and never lost an opportunity of declaring the same. He was a man who had what is called “risen in the world,” but the fact never detached him from those who occupied humbler positions, neither did he attempt to trade on what so often is repulsive to us—the boasting of the so-called “self-made” man. In public work and business concerns he was broadminded, progressive, and full of deep human sympathies. As an enthusiastic educationalist he believed that no opportunity should be denied to those who aspired to learn and to improve. We have lost a neighbour, a friend, and a man whose example, in many respects, is well worthy of imitation, and whose memory will long live in the respect of all who came in contact with him. It is, I know, the wish of all present that our message of condolence should, through our secretaries, at once be forwarded to the bereaved family. I beg to move that this be done.

Mr J Tompkins referred to his early acquaintance with Mr Marlow, and Mr Bradfield’s motion was carried in sympathetic silence.

The Rushden Women’s Liberal Association then, through the hon. secretary (Mrs Weale), have sent Mrs Marlow a letter of condolence.
