THE END of Rushden Mothers' Club came just a few weeks after the death of one of its founder members.

The club folded last week, 17 years after Audrey Mair hit upon the idea of a social group for young mums.

Janet Holloway, a former chairwoman, said: "Audrey was Rushden's health visitor and founded the club all those years ago.

"She went up to live in Edinburgh, but still kept in touch. It's strange that her death should come at a time like this."

Her views were echoed by the present chairwoman, Vera Howson, who said: "It's so sad and so ironic that she died at the time the club she set up has died."

The club has closed despite an amalgamation offer by the Rushden Wives' and Mothers' Club who wanted to merge after seeing a Leader report on its plight.

Mrs Howson explained: "The offer from their club still stands, they are being very good about it. Our members felt we were too old to join their club, their members are much younger and it would be like taking a backward step."

At the final meeting all the former presidents of the club were given badges of honour. They were presented by Joy Case, who is a member of both clubs.

Plans were unveiled for one final fling — the mums have organised a night out next month for their swansong.

Mrs Howson said that any donations for Audrey Mair should go to Cancer Research.
