With deep regret we have to record the death, which occurred on Tuesday at 9, Beaconsfield-place, Rushden, of Mrs. Rose Maddams, wife of Mr. T. Maddams and only child of Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Holmes, with whom she and her husband had lived since their marriage.
The deceased was highly esteemed by a large circle of friends throughout this district, particularly in her association with the Wellingborough-road Mission Hall, Rushden, but most of all as founder and leader of the mandolin orchestra (“Miss Holmes’s Mandolin Orchestral Band”), which has been in existence about ten years. Miss Holmes started having lesson under Mr. J. W. Randall, of Higham Ferrers, and was afterwards trained by Mr. Philip Bone, F.R.S.A., of Luton.
Miss Holmes commenced teaching the mandolin, and formed a mandolin quartette party, from which (eventually with the addition of 11 other mandolin players, all her own pupils) she formed the band. Before the war the band was in great demand, and during the war the wounded soldiers at Higham Ferrers V.A.D. Hospital, the Hinwick Hospital, and other places were given many treats by the band, under Miss Holmes’s conductorship. In many other towns in the district concerts were given by the Mandolin Band.
The deceased had worked for Messrs. C. W. Horrell, Ltd., and was married only as recently as last Whitsuntide. Mr. Maddams is on the clerical staff of the Rushden Co-operative Society. Mr. C. H. Holmes is a highly respected member (and secretary) of the Rushden Mission Silver Band.
The deceased was taken ill about six months ago with throat trouble. The doctor was consulted, but, in spite of all that he could do, the affection developed until Mrs. Maddams could not take sufficient support. She passed peacefully away on Tuesday, at the age of 25. Much sympathy is felt with the bereaved husband and parents in their sad bereavement.
