The Rushden Echo and Argus, 3rd November, 1944, transcribed by Gill Hollis

Annie Maria Linnett

Death Hastened By Fall
Northampton Inquest on Rushden Woman

The Northampton Coroner (Mr. A. J. Darnell) accepted the medical evidence offered at the inquest at Northampton General Hospital on Wednesday on Annie Maria Linnett (61), of 96, Portland-road, Rushden, to the effect that her death in that institution was primarily due to pulmonary embolism, but was accelerated by a fractured thigh sustained in a fall at her home on October 15th.

Dr. A. T. Welsh, casualty officer, said that the fractured thigh was revealed at an examination on entry to the hospital.  The fracture was reduced, but no operation was performed and Mrs. Linnett did not make much progress and died on October 29th.

Herbert Lewis Linnett, retired male nurse and husband of the deceased, said that at about 9.50 p.m. on October 15th, his wife went to the scullery and, hearing a cry, he followed her and found her lying on the floor.  He was not certain whether she had tripped over the carpet or whether her leg had given way.  From his experience he was able to find the displaced bone and to render first aid in the way of splints and bandages before sending for a doctor, on whose advice his wife was removed to Northampton General Hospital.
